Sold Cape Dorset is located on Dorset Island at the southern tip of Baffin Island, Canada. Cape Dorset other wise known as the Capital of Inuit Art has been the main stage for drawing, printing and carving since the 1950’s. Even today approximately 22% of the population are artists in one sense or another, they have been dubbed the most artistic community in Canada.
Between 1959 and 1974 more than 48,000 pieces of art came out of this Inuit Hamlet on Dorset Island. This is where this piece of art has been traced to the Cape Dorset area in the late 50’s to early 60’s. There is a signature and a set of registration numbers on the back along with a authentic Inuit art identification marker on the bottom.
I have had the registration number ran through a data bank and have not been able to come up with the artists name. The signature is very hard to read, the numbers allowed Earls Court Gallery to obtain the origin and date of this piece of Inuit Art.
It is a nice piece with nice curves and a good look, a great piece of early Cape Dorset Inuit Art.
